In the 1920s, women had obtained the right to vote, but new social changes of the time had robbed them of their dignity and so they were shocked when they saw what women did. They were shocked by the fact that women dressed like men and smoked and drove cars. The idea of women smoking was so repugnant to them because it was so un-womanly. They felt that women should not behave like men, not even in private. The change in society was so much that even women were wearing pants but they still considered it un-womanly for women to act like men.
